Mediation as a social construct

Summary/Abstract: Mediation is generally depicted as a particular kind of «action», that is as a helping or supporting intervention. Within the social system of assistance (social work/service), help is represented as a problem solving context, a situation of transformation and evolution. If we can envision mediation as intervention that’s because there is operating a solid modernist construction produced and reproduced by the ongoing autopoietic processes of social communication. This paper explores the social construction of mediation at three levels: the cultural designation of the intervention at the systemic level of modern society, the operating definitions by the institutes and organizations involved, and the communicative construction in interaction systems. The essay explains intervention as a specific form of communication within the social system of assistance suggesting that mediation is a contingent promise.
