Summary/Abstract: Using the biography of Hermann Baun, a long-time employee of the German consulates in Odesa and Kyiv, as an example of the predominantly Soviet period, the author reconstructs not only the personal involvement of this native of Odesa in the daily routine of the German consular offices in the Ukrainian SSR and his contribution to their information and intelligence activities, but also analyses the system of permanent surveillance of the GPU - NKVD of the Ukrainian SSR over the functioning of foreign diplomatic missions in the republic and, in particular, the repeated attempts of the Red Secret Police to recruit G. Baun.
