Summary/Abstract: Public reaction to acts of cannibalism varied. Alongside relatively lenient forms of punishment – such as inflicting minor bodily harm or expulsion from the community – there were more severe responses, including extrajudicial reprisals (beatings to death or execution by shooting), the latter being the more common. Most of the arrested cannibals died either from starvation or mob justice. Those who survived may have contributed to the continuation or spread of cannibalistic practices during the Holodomor.
