Summary/Abstract: This article provides an overview of Restorative Justice, a relatively new approach emerged as an effort to correct some of the weaknesses of the western criminal system. Warning against an understanding of Restorative Justice as a mere alternative program to prison or a new application of mediation, the author explains that it is, instead, a paradigm shift offering new lenses to look at the reality of criminal justice and a new conceptual framework to re-elaborate its meanings. The article exposes the principles of Restorative Justice highlighting its systemic approach that understands crime as a social conflict, focuses on the harms and needs of the individual victim and the community affected by crime, and points to the individual and social responsibilities to repair the harms and prevent crime addressing its structural roots in a specific social context. At the end, the article documents benefits and possibilities offered by Restorative Justice and lists some of its challenges, engaging the readers in an effort to expand the vision of Restorative Justice towards practices that address broader social justice issues.
