Summary/Abstract: The creation of a new Ottoman sancak is usually dated from the appointment of its first sancakbey. The reorganisation of the already existing civil and military administration of the area and the different, often complex steps in the establishment of the new liva have so far been little studied, leaving many questions unanswered. How, for example, can a sancak whose detailed surveys and summary register on military prebends has not yet been completed have its own military? Why did the Ottoman administration continue to exist in territories recaptured by Christians in the Long Turkish War? Why did some of the sancaks have several names at the same time? The massive amount of resources processed during the development of the ’Collection of Ottoman Defters’ database has drawn attention to the governing the functions of the kilic, which were the basic, indivisible units of prebendal estates serving to supply the spahis, swhom the provincial provincial army of the Ottoman Empire relied on. The investigation of this economic-financial-military units, which has yet to be precisely defined, has made it possible to clarify our knowledge and answer some questions. In the present study, based on case studies of the military in the borderland of the sancak of Szigetvár we highlight the most important trends in the early organisation of the provincial army, providing a new perspective on the process of the formation of a sanjak in Hungary.
