Summary/Abstract: In 1903, Jan Bukowski, a Krakow painter, discovered a medieval statue of the Virgin Mary withChild and pomegranate in the attic of a church in Bolesławiec on Prosna. A dozen years later, the local priest Marian Rogoziński found four more minor statues of holy maidens, which, together with the previously found figure of the Virgin Mary, formed the so-called altar of thefour virgins. In this paper I attempt to reconstruct the history of this altar and the figures thatbelonged to it, and then to formulate a theological and philosophical interpretation of itsrich symbolism. In this way, I am trying to bring back the memory of these statues, which, although nowadays kept in the museum of the Archdiocese of Czestochowa, can still playan important role for the local community.
