Summary/Abstract: At the end of the 16th century, Martin Somogyi, a Hungarian orphan of noble origins, became a close confidant of the Austrian and Spanish archdukes Albert and Isabella, governors of the Spanish Netherlands and vice-captain of their bodyguards. Some decades later, Somogyi was perhaps one of the first Hungarian readers of Miguel de Cervantes and his Don Quijote, and he was in touch with several key members of the Brussels government. In between his youth and death his talent as well as the insistence and lobbying of two powerful noble dynasties (several members of the Cardona and Dietrichstein families) flew him up the ranks, and granted him estates, important and delicate diplomatic tasks and courtly services.
