Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the relations between Russia and Ukraine over the period between the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, with the aim of identifying and scrutinising the major antecedents and causes of the 2014 crisis. As the factors of territorial domination and eco-nomic influence heavily affect the bilateral relations of the two states, the study approaches the topic from a geopolitical and geoeconomic perspective. The first chapter of the study briefly outlines the theoretical framework. The second chapter analyses the geopolitical aspects of the Russian-Ukrainian relations in the eight-year-long period following the collapse of the USSR. The third section examines the economic dimension of the topic from a geoeconomic point of view. The fourth chapter uses the methodological approach of critical geopoli-tics in order to identify and analyse three discourses interpreting the question of NATO-enlargement. The fifth section examines Ukraine’s dilemma of signing the European Association Agreement, and points out, that by 2010, the country became the epicentre of the rivalry between two geoeconomic projects: the Eur-asian integration and the Eastern Partnership of the European Union.
