Summary/Abstract: I am going to consider the strains of liberalism (focusing on the concept of tolerance), since the publishing of John Rawls’s social-liberal foundation in A Theory of Justice in 1971 through the 90’s, which period might be called the phase of modern liberalism. This phase is followed (or rather is intertwined), by attempts to reformulate liberalism, creating the framework the politics of „liberal fundamentalism”. In its effect, within liberalism itself, there will arise a theoretical self-contradiction regarding the concept of tolerance. Bassam Tibi’s less theoretical, but political, proposal of Leitkultur tries to avert the unsolvable theoretical contradiction.
