Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the letter books of King Matthias I. Several manuscript collections of the ruler’s letters were compiled in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some volumes have survived in their original form, others only in late modern copies. The volume with the richest content, and therefore the one most often quoted in the literature, belongs to the latter group, with only an 18th century copy surviving in the collection of Ferenc Széchényi. However, a comparison of this copy with a printed edition of letters from the 1740’s has shown that it was in fact compiled from the latter, so that its contents cannot be regarded as a source of independent value.
