Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the 19th century, Sovata evolved from a modest “bathing” place into a well-known thermal resort, becoming a favourite meeting place for the social and cultural elites of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and, later on, of Greater Romania. Its natural setting and exceptional therapeutic potential distinguished Sovata from other similar destinations, attracting an increasingly diverse and numerous public over the years. After the integration of Transylvania into the Romanian state, Sovata further strengthened its prestige. Queen’s Mary decision to come to Sovata resort played a significant role in enhancing its reputation, attracting numerous political and cultural personalities of the time. Overall, the modernization of the resort’s infrastructure, along with the dynamics of the social and cultural interactions within its relatively confined space, reflects the profound transformations experienced by the Transylvanian society at the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century.
