Introduction: Leisure Time in the Past, Present and Future!

Summary/Abstract: As an academic discipline, the field of leisure studies continues to generate thought-provoking reflections on its meaning and purpose in the past, present, and future. Dictionaries urge us to understand leisure as that portion of time outside of work, which people tend to fill with various activities for relaxation, rest, and enjoyment. However, the definitions of leisure are much deeper and more diverse throughout history, depending on mentalities, sensibilities, and customs—that is, on the worldview and philosophy of life in all its complex dimensions. Contemporary times hold pluralistic and even contradictory conceptions about time in general and the use of free time in particular. Writing a history of leisure involves describing different mindsets shaped by the spiritual, social, cultural, and political values of each era.
