The Polish identity discourse in Andrzej Stasiuk’s novel Przewóz

Summary/Abstract: Andrzej Stasiuk frequently employsnarrative forms such as storytelling and essayistic reflection to engage in a literary dialogue with po-litical realities. In his works, the author critiques attempts to reshape paradigms of collective memory,reframe them, and base them on a dichotomous “us/them” perspective, both in historiographicaldiscourse and in contemporary European relations. Undoubtedly, the “unprocessed” experiences ofdictatorship on the one hand, and, on the other, the deepening integration and intensifying globalphenomena, significantly influence contemporary Polish identity discourse. The novel Przewóz isyet another literary endeavor – alongside Stasiuk’s numerous journalistic works – to confront theemotionally charged identity debate in modern Poland.
