Summary/Abstract: The principal aim of the article is to present how the cultureof the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic stimulated social change in the country. The analysispertains to the theatre as a kind of art deeply embedded in “now and then” of that time. The art thatenthusiastically reacted to all the processes taking place in the sphere of widely considered collective, social life. The example of The Master and Margarita by Andrzej Maria Marczewski demonstrateshow theatre practically initiated a debate on important sociopolitical issues. The spectacles illustratedpolitical processes, social ambitions and the tasks for the widely understood culture that followed. The sketch begins with outlining the most important events of the time. The birth of the Solidaritymovement together with several months of its legalized activity that led to the introduction of MartialLaw in December 1981. Against such background two adaptations of Bulgakov’s novel dated 1980and 1981 are analyzed. Their fundamental point of reference was based on the generational experi-ence that was closely linked to the axiological dimension of human existence. The next part of thearticle concentrates on the 1988 staging of The Master and Margarita, which was produced underdifferent political conditions both in Poland and in the USSR. In order to spot differences in boththe ways the contemporary issues were presented and the means of their presentation leading to theconnection with the audience, the staging was compared to the famous production of Bulgakov’snovel by Maciej Englert.
