Summary/Abstract: Our study attempts to assess whether the educational policies promoted by Constantin Rădulescu-Motru for the development of interwar rural schools were consistent with the needs of the Romanian society and influenced by his involvement in politics. Rădulescu-Motru believed that the reforms carried out in Romania were, for the apparent benefit of today's generations, and all to the real detriment of tomorrow's generations, because they were not designed to support the peasant. In order to return to the specific traditions, Rădulescu-Motru proposed a new doctrine: Romanianism. He understood by this concept the preparation of the type of true Romanian, through discipline and moral elevation. He believed that the student should learn not by looking directly at the teacher's activity, but from the effects of his own actions; the goal was that the student should begin to know himself as a whole, as a social being and not as a truncated being. Rădulescu-Motru was praised for supporting the practical organization of rural education and for orienting Romanian schools towards work-based education. His vision of the development of the educational system was criticized for its conservative tendencies and for misunderstanding the unavoidable process of modernization.
