Summary/Abstract: From 1988 to 1989, Hungary became the main route for he illegal emigration of Romanians. The Hungarian government officially recognised the existence of the refugee crisis and, together with various Hungarian organisations, focused on addressing the urgent problems these people faced. Key roles in supporting the refugees were played by organisations such as the Red Cross and the historical churches, which were actively involved in helping the refugees. These organizations coordinated charity events and fundraises to support the refugees. The Romanian authorities considered them subversive and accused the Hungarian organisations of supporting anti-Romanian actions. Despite the criticism of the Romanian authorities, the assistance provided by these organisations had a significant impact on the lives of the romanian refugees, helping them to overcome the difficulties they faced in crossing the border and thus highlighting the humanitarian solidarity of Hungarian society.
