The Use of the Semicolon in Spanish and Czech and its Frequency in Original and Translated Texts

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the use of the semicolon in Czech and Spanish. Firstly, specialised literature on the use of the semicolon was reviewed for both languages; in Czech sources this punctuation mark is covered to a lesser extent than in Spanish; each language has its special usage. The analysis proper focuses on representation of the semicolon in Czech and Spanish corpora; we observed a) frequency of use in general corpora, b) frequency in translated vs. non-translated texts (from Spanish to Czech). Subsequently, 15 selected works of fiction were examined in more detail. The results reveal that the semicolon, in general, is more commonly used in Spanish than in Czech. In Czech translations of Spanish fiction, use of the semicolon is over three times more frequent than in the reference corpus. There are also author and translator-specific treatments of the semicolon.
