Summary/Abstract: Wilhelm von Humboldt described language in the 19th century as a circle that enclosed its speakers. Thus, speaking another language automatically meant stepping out of the circle of one's mother tongue and entering that of the foreign language. But what if one wants to understand the other language rather than necessarily speak it? In that case, intercomprehension allows one to position themselves between two circles, between two languages of the same linguistic family, by using their native language to understand another—just as is the case with Romance languages.
