Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to explore the discourse functions of Czech polar questions where the overt subject is realised by first and second person pronouns. In order to overcome the pitfalls associated with the identification of the discourse functions, we rely on two data sets (fictional and authentic dialogue) and the triangulation of methods (formal, semantic and pragmatic analysis of Czech data, and analysis of translation counterparts as indicators of discourse functions). The accumulation of explicit and implicit markers of contextual dependency (appeal to the addressee and speaker’s stance) seems to suggest that speakers use the examined questions to express a context-based as sumption and evaluation, turning to the addressee for confirmation.
