Summary/Abstract: Multicultural education is not a concept specific to the contemporary world. In fact, it can betraced back to, for example, the multi-ethnic Habsburg monarchy. In Teschen Silesia, the co-exist-ing ethnicities (the Germans, the Poles, the Czechs and the Jews), religious denominations (RomanCatholicism, Protestantism and Judaism) and various social strata adopted elements of the domi-nant culture alongside their efforts to preserve their own ethnic traditions. In the long 19th cen-tury, schools served as a good vantage point for observations of general cultural exchanges. Theeducational reforms implemented by the authorities transformed public perceptions of the exter-nal world, while allowing tribes/ethnicities and individuals to preserve their native regional worldsand to confront that which was different. The role of secondary school teachers and folk schoolpersonnel was of no small importance in this regard. Educational institutions became a commonground for a relatively peaceful co-existence of ethnicities, religions, estates of the realm, andtheir divergent views.
