Summary/Abstract: Recent studies on the etiology of terrorism highlight the importance of understanding individual engagement in terrorism as a radicalization process influenced by factors at various levels. Radicalization towards terrorism is not a uniform and linear process, but rather a gradual, composed of stages that are often delineated by the transition from non-violent to violent behaviors, or from cognitive to behavioral stages. In line with these transitions, preventive approaches for cognitive deradicalization of ideological beliefs or behavioral disengagement, i.e. the abandonment of terrorist organizations, have been proposed. Counter-radicalisation as a general prevention approach aimed at influencing the broader population of sympathizers and supporters has largely been overlooked, despite its clear potential and positive outcomes in countries implementing this method of terrorism prevention. By visualizing terrorist organizations as pyramids, simply narrowing the base of the pyramid in terms of sympathizers and supporters of the terrorist organization leads to a shrinking of the entire pyramid towards the top, resulting in a smaller number of potential recruits and ultimately members of the terrorist organization.
