Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the role of the Bulgarian and Macedonian diasporas in mediating the historical and political disputes between their respective home countries. Despite longstanding tensions over issues such as national identity, language, and shared historical figures, the Bulgarian and Macedonian diasporas are well-positioned to influence bilateral relations. Their shared cultural roots, relative detachment from local conflicts, and access to global networks allow them to act as intermediaries, proposing solutions to complex issues and voicing discontent. By analyzing the potential of diaspora-led initiatives—such as business forums, cultural exchange programs, youth leadership initiatives, and academic collaborations—this paper argues that diaspora diplomacy presents a unique opportunity to overcome entrenched nationalistic narratives. It also explores the challenges these diasporas face, particularly backlash from hardline nationalist groups, and how they navigate the tension between national loyalty and neutrality. Ultimately, the paper posits that diaspora communities have the potential to foster dialogue and cooperation, contributing to a more constructive relationship between Bulgaria and North Macedonia.
