Summary/Abstract: The article publishes five surviving letters from the founder of the Kherson Archaeological Museum, V. I. Goshkevich, to the chairperson of the Moscow Archaeological Society, Countess P. S. Uvarova. It was possible to establish that Goshkevich contacted the MAS with a proposal to participate in compiling an archaeological map back in 1889. At that time, the MAS had the mapping of the sites as its priority, and these issues were systematically developed at archaeological congresses. Goshkevich later sent Uvarova the initial version of his map of the Kherson province. However, the work was not published; one of the planned five volumes appeared in print, in a significantly expanded form, as late as 1951, thanks to long and zealous efforts by I. V. Fabricius on this project. The letters also discuss Goshkevich’s excavations; Uvarova’s recommendations for electing the scientist as a member of the MAS; and the fate of I. K. Suruchan’s collection.
