DIASPORA DORMITORIES IN TRANSYLVANIA Operating Conditions and Educational Experiences of Student Dormitories in the Carpathian Basin

Summary/Abstract: In the Carpathian Basin, particularly in Transylvania, Hungarian-language diaspora dormitories have a pivotal role in the preservation of Hungarian language education. The objective of our research was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the network of these institutions, the fundamental characteristics of their primary categories, their endeavors to preserve the communities of Hungarians, and the predominant challenges they encounter. Our research methodology entailed preliminarily the overview of literature on the subject, and following that site visits, interviews, and the administration of questionnaires to institutions and their alumni. Our research has demonstrated that the network of diaspora dormitories is indeed making significant contributions to the survival of the Hungarian diaspora. However, we have also identified challenges that may threaten the successful functioning of these institutions in the short term. Consequently, we have formulated recommendations to address those challenges.
