Summary/Abstract: The brutal atrocities committed by the Ottoman authorities in 1915 against Armenians in Turkey was followed by a broad international outrage. Already at that time, following World War I, the Allied Powers considered the option of an international criminal procedure against the perpetrators, that had never been realised. Ever since the qualification of these events is heavily debated. There is a broad international consensus that label these atrocities as genocide, but Turkey consistently opposes that. This article gives an overview on what would be the consequences of qualifying the events as genocide today, could in any way the 1948 Genocide Convention be relevant in this debate and what may be the role of international law in this debate today.
