With the Current, Outside the Current. Strategies of Crossing Borders in Theo Dorgan’s Poetry

Summary/Abstract: The article presented here is an attempt to read Theo Dorgan’s poetry as consistently crossing boundaries and reconciling diverse voices and identities. Border-crossing reveals itself in Dorgan’s work on four separate levels: his attempt to transcend the barrier of class, his strategy of creating a transnational intertextual dialogue, his reaching for liminal language and mythic time, and his taking up the thread of travel. Mapping these enables a fuller understanding of the essence of Theo Dorgan’s poetic project as contesting and bending the stability of borders and identities.
