Summary/Abstract: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841 – 1935) was a US judge and jurist who became a legend in his own lifetime. His book Common Law (1881) is a landmark in legal history. He was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1902 – 1932). He has been revered as an adult jurist, an apostle of judicial restraint, a non-believer in absolute freedoms and abstract rights, praised as a historian and a philosopher. The Path of Law (1897) is one of his most popular essays.
