Summary/Abstract: The Mid-Pentecost (Wednesday of the fourth week after Easter), by virtue of its place between the Resurrection of Christ and the Descent of the Holy Spirit, is adorned with a "double radiance" befitting the "root of the two great solemnities" (Ode 5 of the Canon). Like most "feast days of ideas," this mysterious feast of grace (still unknown in the West) must date back a very long time. In fact, the current service of Mid-Pentecost, along with more recent stichera (from the early 8th century), contains some liturgical elements that some have attributed to Saint Elias of Jerusalem (494-513) or Saint Anatolius of Constantinople (449-458).
