Summary/Abstract: The „Ostoja Pokoju” in Miechowice (German: Friedenshort) is a globally recognizable institution whose activities focused primarily on helping fellow human beings. One of the key aspects of support was to offer shelter, a roof over one's head, often for many years. Growing needs in society generated different solutions and required ingenuity and improvisation. The paper summarizes Eva von Tiele-Winckler's idea for a care facility in Miechowice, the plan for the „Ostoja Pokoju” complex, and individual initiatives to meet the housing needs of those in need (including Tiele-Winckler's innovative project for children – Homes for the Homeless, which was also a pioneering non-profit organization in German history).
