Summary/Abstract: The Republic of Serbia became an independent and independent state in the process of the disintegration of the former SFR Yugoslavia. The process of the disintegration of the former state was not completed precisely on the territory of Serbia, because the part of it that includes the autonomous territory of Kosovo and Metohija is under the protectorate of the United Nations, and the temporary authorities in Pristina unilaterally proclaimed the independence of Kosovo. In such conditions, the Republic of Serbia adopted the Constitution and established all state functions, including the function of defense and security. In the official documents of the national security system of Serbia, among other things, the security environment was analyzed and challenges, risks and threats were identified, which are the subject of this paper. The aim of this work is to determine the perception of public opinion in Serbia about national security. This is because public opinion is the public’s perception of key issues of social life, which can have a decisive influence on the way they are resolved. The focus of the research is focused on the attitudes of public opinion on several key issues, such as: basic challenges, risks and threats to national security and the way in which public opinion is created in Serbia on national security. The basic hypothesis from which the research started is as follows: The government and the media have the greatest influence on the creation of public opinion in the Republic of Serbia on national security. In reaching the goal and confirming the basic hypothesis, scientific methods were used, primarily: comparative method, content analysis, survey and case study. The results of the research are presented in the following text.
