Summary/Abstract: The paper includes a theoretical overview and practical research on the consequences of different historical legacies in the Balkans. In the first part, a short outline of discussions about the West/East division emphasised the positions of Central and Southeastern Europe. In the second part, the Ottoman influence is assessed in aspects like cuisine, music, architecture, language, genetics, and religion. The third part obtains research based on statistics describing regional inequalities within Yugoslavia. The chosen facets are consumption, GDP per capita, and primary school attendance. The latter includes gender discrepancies as well. The main conclusions are that belonging to the Habsburg or the Ottoman Empire strongly affected the future development of Yugoslav republics despite a strong incentive for convergence.
