Summary/Abstract: Developments in the field of artificial intelligence are dynamic and abound with new phenomena whose forms of manifestation are constantly changing. It is undeniable that the world is rapidly moving into the information age in which social interaction will be supported, and possibly replaced, by the Internet of Things, the widespread use of drones, self-learning machines that gain experience in their working environment, avatars and other useful gifts of civilizational progress. However, is there another face of artificial intelligence, which with the help of human creativity can improve the effect of criminal activities? Unfortunately, this possibility is already a reality and the authors will try to unravel the phenomenological framework of Deepfake, as one of the bitter fruits of artificial intelligence. That is why, as a starting point in their research, the authors determine the relationship between Deepfake and artificial intelligence based on the existing theoretical basis, which consists of numerous definitions of both mentioned phenomena. Bearing in mind the importance of the relationship between modern man and information, the authors pay attention to the relationship between Deepfake and the problem of identity theft and then focus their research on the criminal significance of Deepfake. In particular, the authors will consider whether Deepfake violates one’s identity through theft or abuse. In addition to the normative review of national legislation and legal protection of personal data, the paper will also show the impact of Deepfake on the performance of a whole range of criminal activities such as fraud, social engineering, extortion, sextortion, acting online criminal markets, etc. The following is a consideration of the relationship between Deepfake and avatars, as two sides of the same artificial intelligence coin, i.e., two vectors of its technological force’s positive and negative effects. In the paper, the authors will try to answer the question of whether the avatar is the evil IT twin of Deepfake, which is why software for creating avatars will be analyzed. Lastly, in the final part of the paper, the authors will deal with the possibility of Deepfake abuse in the media through examples of the geopolitical significance of media influence factors in the current period of the administration of American President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin, government election in Taiwan and in the light of the global election year 2024 in which political elites will be consolidated, changed or lost in many countries of the world we live.
