Summary/Abstract: The cure for underdeveloped and developing countries is to invest into human resources in order to improve economic deficits. This has become particularly evident with the development of information technologies and the possibility to use worldwide knowledge to improve human resources even without major investments. Historically speaking, reliance upon typical education and the supply of human capital is being increasingly questioned. The reason behind is the disconnection between education and market demands, as proved by countries that place special importance to education in order to compensate for their lack of physical resources. The skillset of the labor force is becoming the competitive tool in the 21st century. The power of knowledge creates new products and new technologies, and the power of labor must ensure the product quality and competitiveness. Education and employment nowadays have different priorities. Employers are interested in jobs performed by employees, how skillfully the staff performs and the quality of their performance. The logic of education implies following and monitoring curricula, the rate of adoption and the grading. Cooperation between these two poles is required, as most often these two seem unrelated. Employers need to apply the knowledge and researchers need to utilize the actual practice. In overcoming the problem of education for the future and future occupations, there is a need to shift to the competency-based education concept. The competency-based concept comprises acquisition of technical knowledge, methodological skills, self-study and life-long learning, as well as dealing with risks and constant changes. Quality standards and certification of certain occupations and job positions are of particular importance in this regard. With the development of the economy, the importance of the quality of labor force education has been gradually maturing. Challenges of how to help a large number of employees to successfully perform increasingly complex tasks and to fulfill with their work requirements set by employers. The paper investigates the significance and importance of adapting the lifelong education system of the population for the future and future occupations. To that end, education in the Republic of Serbia should be recognized as a development opportunity with major impact upon all performances of the society’s development.
