Summary/Abstract: The European Union has taken significant steps to protect media freedom and pluralism, recognizing them as core democratic values, despite lacking direct jurisdiction in this area. One of the EU's key tools is the Media Pluralism Monitor, which systematically assesses legal, political, economic, and social risks to media pluralism across all member and candidate countries using a comprehensive set of indicators. Findings from this tool have informed initiatives like the proposed European Media Freedom Act, highlighting persistent threats in both traditional and digital media, such as ownership concentration, political interference, and lack of transparency.
