Birthday and funeral feasts in Silesian Dukedom in the light of source materials from the Polish Ethnographic Atlas

Summary/Abstract: In this study, the culinary traditions accompanying feasts organized during birthday and funeral ceremonies will be discussed, in particular those after christenings and funerals. The rules for preparing the food and drinks, the selection of the place and people acting as organizers, as well as the people invited to participate in the event will be presented. The main subject of these considerations will be the products and dishes that constitute the menu of such feasts. The role and meaning of served dishes will be presented, including their symbolic or magical meaning. The discussed issues also include those related to serving relic products/dishes and serving alcohol. The dialect names of the discussed events will be presented as well. This text will be primarily a source study. The researchers’ notes will be taken into account that are based both on the narratives of the village inhabitants and on a few representations of these narratives (literal fragments of the interlocutors’ recorded statements).
