Summary/Abstract: Customs are an important part of human life in society. Their different versions often depend on many factors that make up a person’s everyday experience of the world, which is also shaped by the natural and social environment in which they live. They not only help a person to structure time into the sacred and the profane, but also provide the opportunity to interact actively with the environment and people around them. The topic of the role of customs and holidays in human life has been addressed in many scientific publications (e.g. Feglová, 1985; Jakubíková, 1980; Popelková, 2014). This article deals with the identification of contemporary versions of holidays, cultural events and “adventures”, which are presented as opportunities for experient ial tourism in the Poloniny region. It examines their similarities and differences in relation to the degree of local identification in the ritual or ritualized activities performed. It highlights the function of natural environment (e.g. Orlove, 1980; Rappaport, 1979) and prosociality (e.g. Sosis, Alcorta, 2005; Uhrin, Bužeková, 2022) in the context of holidays and events. It also focuses on the integrative or differential categorization into “we” and “they” (Eriksen, 1995), as well as the conditions under which local socialization “selection” for events for “us” and for “the others” is realized.
