A Content Analysis on Proverbs Related to Speaking Skills

Summary/Abstract: This study, which aims to examine proverbs in terms of speaking skills, was carried out with the qualitative research method. The data set of the study consists of Ömer Asım Aksoy's Proverbs Dictionary. In the study, data were collected using the document analysis technique and analyzed using the content analysis technique. As a result of the study, 189 proverbs related to speaking skills and 4 themes and 32 categories related to these proverbs were determined. Accordingly, 105 of the proverbs are about the speaker, 21 are about the listener, 56 are about the message and 7 are about feedback. Based on the results obtained in the study, it was determined that there were proverbs mostly related to the theme of speaker and message and in these proverbs, categories such as speech-thinking relationship, confidentiality of speech, place-time appropriateness, word-action relationship, functionality of words, style, consistency and accuracy come to the fore. Proverbs related to speaking skills contain messages about the characteristics that the speaker, listener, message and feedback should have during the speaking process.
