Summary/Abstract: Analyzing artificial intelligence and creativity through the lens of machine vision, this article examines the impact of the vision model developed in computer scienceon our social and political values and institutions. It proposes a creative “conceptualengineering” experiment to construct a non-trivial perception machine, drawing on twoscientific articles about human-machine relations: Heinz von Foerster’s “Perception ofthe Future and the Future of Perception,” in which the concept of a “non-trivial machine”first appeared, and Gerald M. Edelman and George N. Reeke’s “Is It Possible to Constructa Perception Machine?” Through a critical reading of these works, the author establishesconceptual foundations for a theory and praxis of machine perception, and reflects on thebroader problem of epistemic and racial (in)justice in the technical industry concernedwith making machines “see.”
