On the history of reflection on culture

Summary/Abstract: The notion that although culture as such has existed for centuries, culture as a theoreticalissue is of recent origin can serve as a starting point for considerations on the history of reflection onculture. The identification and conceptualization of this issue, along with its social and intellectualfactors, are the focal interest of the history of cultural reflection. This field should not be reductivelyidentified with either the history of culture or culture theory. While the history of reflection on cul-ture is closely related to these fields of knowledge, it enjoys a relative epistemic independence andimportance in the teaching process. Historians of cultural reflection are also theoreticians of culture,and their inquiry into and interpretations of what has been written about culture are the study ofculture itself.
