Summary/Abstract: Poetic dreams, which aim to practice divination, can be traced back to the origins of classical Chinese poetry. Over time, certain dreams captured in poetry by the Mandarins also began to have the function of allusively advancing political messages. However, those composed during the Tang dynasty seem to open up new perspectives under the harsh constraints of the established imperial examination system. While most of the poetic dreams of earlier periods conveyed a fictitious, unreal world, often with the intervention of the Taoist saints, the dreams of the Tang poets featured more and more human beings, notably family members and friends. This evolution of literary dreams raises a number of questions. With the help of theoretical elements of psychology, including the dream interpretation (Sigmund Freud) in particular, we attempt to scrutinize the relationships hidden in the dream images provided by poet student candidates enrolled in the imperial examination of their time.
