Summary/Abstract: In this article we will analyse the conception of dream in three of William Shakespeare’s plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It and The Tempest. These plays belong to different periods of his production, to the comedy and, respectively, to the so-called ‘last plays’ in The Tempest. Dream is a fundamental thematic axis, represented in the opposition between imagination and reality, in the world of magic and love, in metafiction, in the presence of an idyllic and magical natural world or in the subversion of the social order, which is finally re-established at the end of these plays. In short, the dream is one of the main themes of the three works studied, where the great master of world literature creates stories based on the combination of fantasy and reality, dream and wakefulness, nature and court life, freedom and social conventions.
