Summary/Abstract: Price and quantity indicators, proposed in the 1920s, have since the early 2000s experienced a kind of revival, which results from the fact that, contrary to indices, these indicators are less sensitive to the occurrence of zero prices and quantities. This property is particularly important in the analysis of market segments that have a high turnover of products offered for sale. Price and quantity indicators can be applied in the analysis of scanned data, i.e. data coming directly from retail chains. The analyst is then faced with the dilemma of choosing an appropriate formula of the indicator, the two most popular being the Bennet and Montgomery formulas. The aim of the research described in the paper is to identify the potential differences between the values of the Bennet and Montgomery bilateral indicators (price and quantity) and also to see how the filtering of scanner data and their aggregation affect the scale of these differences. The paper compares both the axiomatic properties of these indicators and the potential differences in their values obtained for selected groups of scanner products. The results of the study indicate that the differences in the values between the Bennet and Montgomery indicators reach several percentage points. Particularly the estimates of the price effects, but also the quantity effects depend on the level of data aggregation and the use of data filters highlights both the price and quantity effects.
