THE IMPACT OF RENAISSANCE AND REFORM MOVEMENTS ON WESTERN ENLIGHTENMENT

Summary/Abstract: The Renaissance and Reformation movements are very important developments in the political, social, religious and cultural history of Europe. These movements led the West to a great physical, social and intellectual change and transformation. In the literature, it is seen that the Renaissance and Reform movements are dealt with in a narrower framework within the concepts of art, literature, theology, painting and aesthetics. It is understood that these movements have been analyzed in more specific areas and that holistic evaluations have not been made in terms of their results. For this reason, this study evaluates the impact of the Renaissance and Reformation movements on the political, economic and social developments of the period and draws attention to the political and intellectual changes that occurred in the West. In this study, qualitative research methods were utilized and sources dealing with the political, artistic and social developments of the period were used predominantly. In this study, in which the Renaissance and Reformation movements are evaluated in many dimensions, the Crusades, Geographical Discoveries and Humanism, which fed these movements, are tried to be explained with subheadings. The study concludes that East-West interaction played an important role in the developments in the West. In Western historiography, the role of the East in the enlightenment of the West is not sufficiently emphasized; however, it has been observed that the East also contributed significantly to the enlightenment of the West.
