SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH OBITUARIES

Summary/Abstract: In this study, based on the definitions of semiotics, the tools of semiotic theory will be used and with the help of these tools, a detailed examination of obituaries, which are widespread in British society, will be conducted. The linguistic and non-linguistic elements used in the obituaries will be analysed in detail in order to show how obituaries reflect social and cultural layers of meaning. To this end, the ways in which the use of language, symbolic expressions and visual designs in the obituaries shape the projection of the deceased person in the social memory and their effects in the social context will be analysed. The aims to find out the role of obituaries in communication and their social functions with regard to how obituaries support emotional solidarity and collective identity formation processes among individuals and how this reflects on social structures.
