Summary/Abstract: Kaibara Ekiken was a Neo-Confucianist scholar, philosopher and doctor during the Edo period (1603–1868) in Japan, who observed and summarized different aspects of health protection in his writing, called Yojokun (“Instructionsfor Nourishing of Life”). His philosophy was based on the teachings of Chinese Neo-Confucianist philosopher, Zhu Xi. In his writing, Yojokun, Ekikeninvolved the medical knowledge of his age, and he made it easily understandable for commons. He worked in his subjective persuasion, experiences andthe philosophy that he considered important. By writing Yojokun, Ekiken’s aimwas to give basic guidance in order to preserve our physical and mental condition, to live a long life without illness. In this paper I will introduce Ekiken’smain thought about health protection through some examples from Yojokun.
