Kāvyādarśa in Tibet

Summary/Abstract: The following short article is a starter-pack of sorts to the study of Sanskritickāvya in Tibet. It is based on two longer studies I have undertaken in the past,and it is a slightly enlarged and annotated version of a paper delivered at theCsoma-jubilee in 2009. After an introduction I discuss the problem of definingand translating the concept ‘kāvya’. I then proceed to present one of the earliest kāvyaśāstras, that of Daṇḍin, which was translated into Tibetan in the 13thcentury. The next section discusses how this work was presented to Csoma inone of the Alexander-books. The discussion is then broadened to present someaspects of how the study of kāvya was received and undertaken in Tibet, identifying along the way the most important Tibetan commentaries to Daṇḍin’swork, some objections that are listed in these works, and the way in which theexegetes refuted them. After concluding that the reception of kāvya in Tibetwas an uneasy one, I present some scope for future studies.
