Summary/Abstract: The global financial crisis of 2008, compounded by Greece's sovereign debt crisis, exposed significant vulnerabilities in the Greek banking sector, including over-leveraging, excessive exposure to sovereign debt, and inadequate capital buffers. These challenges necessitated a wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) between 2006 and 2022, which emerged as critical mechanisms for stabilizing the banking system and aligning it with European standards. This study emphasizes the importance of regulatory alignment, strategic collaboration, and digital transformation in enhancing resilience and fostering long term growth. The lessons from this transformative period highlight the role of M&A as both a crisis management tool and a strategic pathway toward modernization and sustainable development in financial systems.
