Name and Origin – Beginnings of the Urban Development of Modern Timişoara

Summary/Abstract: Why do certain cultures use the same places? How do they transform concepts into factual matter? What are the reasons of urban development? Urbanization is often described as a process of creation and production. The way the local conditions fertilise the creative processes is extremely telling. A place can be viewed as an analytical tool, or contrast agent, which involves complex observation and investigation of space and mindset. As space develpoment draws on a multiplicity of materials and resources, it automatically senses the place as a totality – a kind of holistic perception that combines natural and cultural denominations, social reality as well as historical reflection. The study investigates the specifics of site, the natural as well as the geopolitical conditions of the place called Timişoara. Whatever the physical outcome may be – the transformation of local materials or mindset, of natural landscape or cultural topography, the change of ruling systems is among the most powerful forces that have shaped the place and the knowledge about it. Trying to understand the origins also build upon the interpretation of the past in current history. In this regard, Timişoara seems to have many beginnings. As time goes by, cultures do so too. Here, change becomes an asset for urban development. However, the name of the city already points to the importance of the geographical position for the appearance of localities in the Banat region.
