Summary/Abstract: The variants of the genitive termination -aego/-aago/-ago in the original Old Bulgarian chants are the specific object of research in the article. It turns out that the disciples of Sts Cyril and Methodius combined the still unabbreviated inflection from the dialect of the Thessalonian brothers and the already abbreviated variant -ago from the idiom of Great Moravia. The Old Bulgarian hymnographers used either a contracted or an uncontracted form (more likely -aago) according to the required number of syllables in the verse. The data of the Old Bulgarian epigraphic monuments show that shortened endings were perceived in Bulgaria as more colloquial during the time of the kings Boris, Simeon and Peter. That is why the introduction of the contracted termination -ago already into the earliest Old Bulgarian hymnography, which is official church literature of a high style, can also be considered as a linguistic heritage of the Great Moravian Mission.
