Summary/Abstract: This article is designed to introduce the main institutions of law within an overall context of social workers’ professional activities. First, as any introduction, it is simple and it goes back in time to the origin of the modern law and that is to be the Roman law. The paper presents an undemanding classification of private and public law and it associates the original institution of laws to the current organization of the modern society. Secondly, it makes a link between ius naturalis, (described by Iustinian as an unchangeable and permanent law applicable at any time to any individual irrespective of states and religion) and the present-day human rights law. The article insist on presenting the evolution of law from the national documents protecting essential human rights to the international convention and treaties providing for effective protection of individuals affected by a violation of their rights. Finally, it briefly presents how a social worker may appeal to the existing instruments and procedures to protect their clients in a time and cost-effective manner. However, the conclusion is that there will be a possibility to change patterns and different models of practice with a special focus on a regular review of relevant laws by portraying only the necessary institutions and legal procedures to the social worker and creating a mixed working group. The paper insists in affirming that exploring the connection with other areas (laws, in our specific case) is important as long as social work remains to focus on and as long as we have a sharper spotlight to the outcomes for service users.
